National Lighthouse Day

Published by Elaine Arthur on 7 August 2012

Light Houses. You probably don’t think of them much. UNLESS you are the man or woman who declared today as National Lighthouse day.

So. Let’s get our facts on!

1. The Statue of Liberty is technically a lighthouse, and the first one with electricity as well.

2. The first lighthouses were fired by, er, fire. Imagine that job on a windy night…

3. Round The Twist was a classic 90’s kid’s TV show about a widowed father who lived in a lighthouse, where the kids were terrified by the spooky, haunted ‘dunny’ – outside loo. Surreal.

4. The Lighthouse Family brought lighthouses back into the mainstream media eye, as the band released a variety of easy listening hits. The album Ocean Drive sold more than 1.8 million copies in the UK alone!

5. Long after the Lighthouse Family called it quits, Westlife stepped in the helm, releasing single ‘Lighthouse’ on November 11, 2011 to a good critical reception.
