Essential Drinking Games For Freshers

20th September 2017

Freshers week. A rite of passage and the perfect time to get to grips with your course timetable, establish your bearings around a new town and – most importantly – let your hair down before lectures start.

For most this involves partying to excess and getting involved in organised bar crawls, events and gigs – all of which are great but can end up being very costly. Lets face it you don’t want to log on to your online banking only to realise you spent your student loan on a round of Jägerbombs for the entire faculty.

So with this in mind we’re suggesting taking it back to the old school for Freshers week 2017 with a good old fashioned night of drinking games. Most of these need little or no preparation meaning you can host an impromptu night of fun in your halls or house at short notice. Hangovers and beer fear the morning after are no fun so GB Posters promotes drinking both responsibly and in moderation!

Beer Pong

What you need: A large (preferably long) table, 12 plastic cups, ping pong balls
How to play: Arrange the cups in a diamond formation at each end of the table and fill quarter full with your chosen drink. Split into teams and alternate turns to attempt to bounce a ping pong ball into one of the cups. If a ball lands in a cup, the contents of that cup are drank by the opposing team member and the cup is removed from the table. The first team to eliminate all of the opponent’s cups is the winner!

Battleshots

What you need: A battleshots board – buy one here or make your own with these cool DIY instructions (via lifecheating)
How to play: Based on the classic game Battleships this is a guessing game for two players. Each player takes it in turns to guess the location of the shots each player hides on a the grid that can’t be seen by their opponent. Players take turns calling out a row and column on the other player’s grid in an attempt to name a square that contains an opponent’s shot. If you successfully locate a shot your opponent takes the punishment! The winner is the first to sink all of the opponent’s shots by correctly guessing their location.

Ring Of Fire

What you need: Deck of cards, pint glass
How to play: Best played in large groups, in this game the deck of cards are spread face down around the pint glass in the middle of the table. Players then gather around with their own drinks and take turns to pick up a card – each of which has a different meaning or action. A full list of the card rules/actions can be found here. Just pray you dont land on the last King!

Boxing

What you need: Timer/phone, 2 shot glasses, deck of cards
How to play: Two people play this game just like a boxing match. Sit opposite each other at the table and each draw a card from the top of the deck. Whoever scores lowest takes that punch and drinks their shot of beer. The corner men fills the empty shot glass as quickly as they can and you draw again until there are no cards remaining.

Play Your Cards Right

What you need: Deck of cards
How to play: 21 cards are placed face down in a diamond formation. Starting at the base each player must take it in turns to reach the point of the diamond by turning a card on each row and predicting if it will be higher or lower than the previous card. Failure means taking a shot, resetting the cards and start all over again!

Avalanche

What you need: Pint glass and a dice
How to play: Each player sits around a table with their own glass of alcohol. Players take turns by filling the ‘game glass’ with either a small or large amount of their drink and then rolling the dice. Their fate is decided by the number rolled on the dice;

  • 1: The player does nothing, they pass the glass and the die to the next player
  • 2: The player adds more alcohol to the game glass and passes it to the next player, along with the die
  • 3: The player must drink the contents of the game glass
  • 4: The player shouts ‘floor!’ Everyone must either point downward or drop to the ground. Whoever does this last or fails to do it must drink the contents of their glass
  • 5: The player can make anyone of their choosing drink the glass
  • 6: Group choose an original rule of their choosing
